Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a grappling based martial art. It focuses on ground work and is rooted in self-defence - in particular, promoting the concept that a smaller, weaker person can successfully defend themselves against a bigger, stronger person by using proper technique. This makes BJJ suitable for all shapes and sizes.
At Cornerstone BJJ we train hard while looking after our partners. Our classes focus on teaching good technique while keeping you fit physically and mentally. Click here to find out more about our classes and what each one entails.

Gareth Terry
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu black belt (first degree)
Gareth began his BJJ journey in Auckland at the age of 30, while doing his PhD in Psychology. He received his black belt in 2018 and is keen to help people develop the most from their jiu jitsu and not make all the mistakes he did!
Gareth trained in Aotearoa for seven years, and was awarded his blue and purple belts by John Will. He then moved to the UK for three years, training under Roger Gracie black belt Kev Capel, who awarded him his brown belt. After returning to New Zealand, Gareth trained for three years before receiving his black belt from John Will in November 2018.
He has been lucky to train with some of the best practitioners and coaches in the world, and has been exposed to a wide variety of different approaches to BJJ. His coaching style is easy to understand and great for anyone from beginners to advanced BJJ participants.
